Lori's artist's statment:
I received my degree in graphic design from the University of Illinois
and have been working with design and communication of ideas ever since.
As I’ve moved into creating art for selfrather than for clientsI’m still using
those ideas of design and communication but in ways that are more
veiled, loose and playful.

Rob's artist's statement:
I think of my stone carving as a sort of slow-motion version of the
Surrealists' Automatic Writing, wherein the Surrealist writer would
attempt to write down (quickly), whatever presented itself.
In an analysis of my method of stone carving, the process seems
similar to that described above, not in the sense of doing it quickly,
but rather in trying to tap into a source outside of the conscious state.
This process is an uneven and mostly constant struggle between a kind of
not-thinking state where an intuitive process can manifest itself, and a more
self-aware state wherein conscious design decisions are made.
The goal is to "not over-think" the process, perhaps even to not "think" at all.
This is a bit difficult, and involves releasing control and focusing on process
instead of outcome which, it seems, is a good way to conduct one's life as well.
Drummer Matt Wilson has said, "The more I play improvised music the less I want
to understand it". That is the way I am feeling about the process of stone carving at
the moment . . .
